While the standalone value of reputation data is diminishing, it
remains an important baseline for
sender
profiling. For reputation analysis, the Barracuda Spam
Firewall leverages data on both the network addresses used to
send email as well as the domain names embedded in the Web links
of emails gathered by Barracuda Central, an advanced technology
operations center where engineers continually monitor the
Internet for trends in spam and virus attacks. Combining both
the IP and reputation data enables Barracuda Networks to
implement countermeasures to mitigate all spam and virus
threats. Barracuda Central maintains historical data on IP
addresses used in both spam attacks and legitimate email
campaigns. Through Barracuda Reputation analysis, the Barracuda
Spam Firewall can make quick and computationally efficient
decisions to block or accept email based on a simple lookup of
the sender’s IP address against either the Barracuda Blacklist
(“block list”) or the Barracuda Whitelist (“allow list”). Other
network addresses in the “grey area” are left for further
analysis through nine subsequent spam and virus defense layers.
In addition, Barracuda Central maintains reputation on spam
domains, phishing domains, and Web sites known to host malware.
When these domain names are embedded in email message bodies,
the Intent Analysis layer of the Barracuda Spam Firewall can
quickly block email based on a simple database lookup.
This combination of IP and reputation data provides the most
complete reputation analysis in the industry. Updates to the
Barracuda Reputation and Intent Analysis databases are delivered
automatically to the Barracuda Spam Firewall via Barracuda
Energize Updates.
